How I Painted My Vintage Dresser Without Sanding

After having this dresser for SEVEN years, I am FINALLY giving this vintage dresser a makeover! The person who gave it to me several years ago said it was a few generations old so this makeover is long over do. 

If you are looking to re-do one of your own furniture pieces stick around because I'll be going over how what products I used to transform this beautiful vintage dresser!

THE PREP

The reason I’m not sanding this is because it’s too thick (I've tried to sand down a similar piece and I'm gonna pass this time around) Also, there's a lot of detail in the wood work and I don't have the tools (or patience lol) to sand down. 

Before I got started.. this dresser needed a SERIOUS cleaning. It had stickers all over it and a few coffee stains marker. So I scraped the stickers off and wiped it down with first with some all purpose spray and then rubbing alcohol.

You’ll notice a few of the original knobs and pulls are missing or broken, so as much as I didn’t want to.. I had to replace them. So before I got started painting, I removed all the hardware. There were also a few decorative pieces on the dresser which I was able to get off with a flathead. 

PAINT

I used a paint and primer in one from Vaspar Signature. The color I used was Ultra White.

I started with very light coats with a brush until I got the finish I was looking for.

I started painting the dresser with a paint brush but I switched to a paint roller because I didn’t like the brush strokes. Plus I kept finding brush hairs in the paint..smh. I’m really happy I went with the paint roller because you can no longer see the brush strokes and the paint came over very smooth!

For a top coat, I used THIS clear water based finishing spray from Mini-Wax.

HARDWARE

For knobs, I went with THESE brass knobs from Hobby Lobby. I really wanted that antique look so I gave them a "rough" coat of paint and wiped some of it off. I love the way they turned out! 

For pulls, I got lucky and found THESE four pulls (Hobby Lobby for the win again) that were already white but had a distressed look!

DIY VANITY MAKEOVER PART 2 | Fixing my white vanity that turned yellow

Back in 2014, you guys seen me re-do THIS vanity! 

2014 | Before first revamp

Fast forward to 2020, I'm giving this vanity another makeover. I decided to give this vanity to my daughter so she can use it as a desk since online classes are a thing now due to Covid-19 but a few things had to happen before I gave it to her. The paint from the previous DIY turned yellow, the vanity chair had discolored, and to make this as a desk I had add a piece of wood to create a table top.

1. Fixing the Yellowing Paint

Because I didn't want to keep adding layers of paint, sanding was necessary.. at least on the top surface. Luckily my dad happen to have an electric sander I could use to make it easier. Maybe I shouldn't say luckily or easier because I made a mistake using this sander. You see, I've never used one before and while "testing" this sander out I didn't check to see what grit paper was already on there until it was too late. It was an 80 grit paper and it caused some scratches. I did my best to fix it by smoothing it out but a lesson was learned here.

For paint I choose a basic white paint from Vaspar Signature in Ultra White (the white paint you grab off the floor before they mix anything.)

After talking to the guy a Lowes I chose the Miniwax Water Based Finishing Spray Clear Semi Gloss. At first I made a mistake and grabbed an oil based finishing coat. The Lowes employee said you want to get a WATER based top coat since my paint was water based because if not it will turn yellow. It was at that moment that I realized 6 years ago I messed up!! The first time I gave this vanity a makeover I used an oil based primer, a water based paint, and a water based finishing coat which is why my vanity ended up turning yellow in certain areas. 

Hardware: I liked the original hardware but I didn’t like how the brass stood out against the white so I painted them and wiped a majority of the paint off to tone down the brassy look.

2. Fixing and Updating the Vanity Chair

Another problem I had was the chair. Although I thought this print was PERFECT since it was white and gray and it matched my daughters bedding, this also had discolored over the last six years. I really wanted to keep it but if you seen my video where I re-did this chair.. I didn’t take off the original fabric off. The original fabric has to be from the 60 or 70’s and because I didn’t take that fabric off it, anytime I would sit in my chair after a shower or it ended up getting wet, it caused whatever was on the original fabric to transfer to the newer fabric. I tried to soak it in some water with detergent for a few hours and it did not budge.

The search for a piece of fabric.. 

So now to find a piece of FABRIC in the middle of a pandemic where everyone is buying fabric to make masks or sell masks. . challenge accepted.

Walmart's fabric aisles were empty. I couldn’t go into Jo-Anns to get a good look at what they had due to them only offering curb-side. It was hard at first because I really don’t know much about fabric and it was just one of those things I wanted to see in person.

So I thought if I were to buy a vanity chair, what would the fabric be? I went to amazon looked up vanity chairs and one of first things I seen was.. velvet.. suede. I was like BINGO! THAT IS IT. I thought this was perfect because when looking for Aaliyah’s bedding, she really wanted soft furry-like bedding and the velvet just reminded me of that. So I was able to find a seller on Amazon that sold grey velvet.

3. VANITY or DESK?

In my last DIY Vanity video I decided to ditch the part that had a mirror. This was only because I knew I was going to be putting a larger mirror on the wall. Now I kinda wish I would have at least kept that piece because it would make the perfect desk for my daughter who since March 14 has been doing online classes due to Covid-19. 

To fix this I was able to find  a 3/4 inch piece of wood at Lowes and have my dad cut it to the exact size to fit this empty space. It was about $8 for a square piece of wood.

The only thing with this wood is that it was really rough around the edges and had gaps that were noticeable so I was able to find wood edging and ironed it on and painted over it. Smooth table top complete!

This vanity is now perfect for my daughter Aaliyah - she can use it not only ask a desk but also a place to do her nails and makeup as she gets older.

How to Create Your 2020 Vision Board | Quick, Easy, NO Magazines!

My goal when creating my 2020 vision board was to create a vision board that I actually wanted to look at every day. A vision board that wasn't big and bulky. A vision board that was easy to make with NO magazines or cutting involved.

5 Steps to Create a "Digital" Vision board:

1. Write down all of your goals for 2020.

Write down anything and everything you choose to manifest. You can use paper and pen, notepad on phone. I personally used Evernote.

2. Find Your Photos

Google and Pinterest are your best friend here. Choose photos that represent your goals and dreams. Make your life easy by creating a dedicated folder to save your images to. This way when it comes to uploading your photos there's no searching for a tons of pics in your downloads.

3. TIME TO CREATE

Time to create your vision board! You can use any program you're comfortable using. I use PicMonkey because I find it the most user friendly and easy to use. I uploaded each of my images and moved them around until I liked where there were. It should look like a collage of all your goals!

If you want to have more fun and go the traditional vision board route. Feel free to print the photos out, cut them, use scrap book paper, contact paper and have a ball! There's no right or wrong. A vision board should present you and your 2020 goals.

4. Print

Use a printer with colored ink so you can really see and envision the colors of your photos you choose. For example, I added a photo from Jamaica. Seeing that blue water every day makes me want to be there and help me see myself there.

5. Frame and put on your desk

Make it pretty. Something you want to see everyday. Place it somewhere you'll always see it. Your nightstand, your desk, maybe a wall closest to your bed. Totally optional you can always use a thumb tact and stick there or you can check out Amazon for a frame of your choice.

1. THE BABY OIL DUPE

What you'll need:

Any shimmer eye shadow/highlighter color of your choice

Baby Oil (Travel Size is best)

This hack is great if you want glow and shine. The baby oil is really going to give you a beautiful shine with the highlighter inside, but keep in mind you will also have the oily feeling to the skin. 

All you have to do is crush up the highlighter/eyeshadow and combine with the baby oil and shake. 

Few tips:

Keep in mind you'll have to use a lot of highlighter. I used an old broken one. Use shadows you don't 

Take out some oil if you want a more pigmented body illuminator

Play with highlighters/eyeshadows. Because I'm more fair, I wish I would have used a darker highlighter.

2. THE NIVEA AFTER SHAVE BALM HACK

What you'll need:

Any shimmer eye shadow/highlighter color of your choice

Nivea After Shave Balm

For a more pigmented body illuminator, I recommend only using a little bit of Nivea After Shave Balm. Start with a little and add as you get your desired color. 

DIY LIGHT WALL! How To Make Your Bedroom Feel Larger with Lights!

Because my headboard is very tall, it started to make my room feel very small and I needed a new way to make my bedroom feel larger. I've also always wanted to put fairy lights in my bedroom so that gave me the idea to use the fairy lights to elongate my headboard and make the room feel larger and not so cramped.

When you watch the video, you'll see that originally I had my curtain rod right above the window which again just made the room feel very small. I decided to raise the rod to about an inch away from the ceiling, which instantly made the room feel larger. 

I really scored big with these lights I found on Amazon. (You know it's a hit or a miss on there.) They're good to go as soon as you take them out the box! All you do is attached to the command hooks to the wall and you're good to go. Think of them like the icicle lights but for your bedroom and longer! You don't have to loop them up and down if you don't want to (I did so there wasn't wasted lights hiding behind my headboard).

This DIY was super quick and easy and I love how it looks at night. They act like a nightlight in a way. I can still see what I need without turning on the light and waking up my one year old who still sleeps in our room. Watch the video above to see how it's done!

 You don't need an expensive perfume tray. I found this tray at Dollar Tree which is actually a cookie tray!

I love this brush organizer because I can organize my brushes by type (foundation, blush, blending, shader brushes, etc.) It spins so I can easily find my brushes with no hassle. It's actually a desk organizer that I found at TJ Maxx.

Ikea Alex Drawers are really the best way to organize your makeup. You can use small drawer organizers (Dollar Tree) and customize to your needs and liking. I have my drawers organized by face primers, foundations, concealers, etc.

I like having all my palettes spread out so I can find them easily!

Eyeliners, mascaras, blushes, and face powders can easily be organized using these longer drawer bins from Dollar Tree.

HOW I REPAINTED AN OLD VANITY WITHOUT SANDING

The Vanity

About a year ago, I scored a whole set of furniture for free! A dresser, a bed frame, and the most exciting piece.. a vanity. Immediately, I got to work on the bed frame for my daughter. Since it was my first time painting furniture, I googled and asked friends for advice. I was told that when you sand furniture you get the best results and painting over the original furniture just wouldn't look right.

I got a sander and went to work. Well, what a pain this was. The bed had poles, which are obviously round and the sander was flat so it just wasn't working out for me. Even regular sand paper took didn't get the job done. This furniture was passed down a few generations and whatever they used back then was extremely thick and sanding it took FOREVER. Not to mention there was so much detailing and nooks that I couldn't get to. I couldn't believe what I got myself into. It took a week total to sand and paint. There was no way I was doing that to the other two pieces of furniture that had just as much detailing and a thick amount of paint to sand through. 

Finally, a year and some change later, I decided to re-do my vanity because I knew how beautiful I could make this piece. I knew there had to be a way around sanding and guess what, I found a way. All I needed was a good primer! I must admit I was afraid even with a primer that it wouldn't stick because of the fact that the original paint was thick and seemed to have a different type of coating on the top.  

Here's what I used: 

Zinsser Cover Stain Primer

Behr Satin Enamel Paint

Rust-oleum Polyurethane Spray

Foam Brushes (I found that last time the brushes left too many bristle marks)

(These products were used for the vanity, I used different products on the chair)

Be sure to remove all hardware and drawers before getting started.

All products worked out great. I applied light coats starting with the primer. I did about three coats waiting a half hour in between each coat. Then, I did 3 light coats of paint, waiting an hour in between each coat. I then finished off with the Polyurethane spray. 

I'm very happy with the results and I do not regret not sanding! I'll never sand again after my first experience. Anyone can do this. All you need is the right materials and a little bit of patience. I say a little because I don't have much patience and even I can do this! 

The Chair

To get started painting, I unscrewed the cushion off the chair and sprayed a primer on the chair. Yes, I used a spray instead of painting it by hand. Why? Because those little poles you see are a pain! I learned my lesson after doing my daughters bed. Also, you can't see it in the pictures but all of the groves in this set of furniture are a dark grey color which makes it harder to cover! Spraying the primer and the paint made the chair a piece of cake!

Isn't the fabric on the cushion pretty? Sike! The fabric was hideous so I went to Jo-Ann's fabric to get a pretty white and grey damask fabric. To remove the old fabric, I removed the staples with pliers and found the original piece of fabric still on it. I left that piece on and just covered it with my new piece of fabric. I bought a half of a yard. I recommend getting a little bit more than half of a yard just because half of a yard JUST cut it. That's of course you have the same size cushion as mine.

Center your fabric onto the cushion and using a staple gun from the fabric store, start stapling the edges. Tug on the fabric for a tight fit as you go around. If you find any staples hanging out, hammer them down. Wait until the furniture is done drying to put the cushion back on. 

DIY - GLITTER MAKE UP BRUSH HOLDERS

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
MOD PODGE
GLITTER OF YOUR CHOICE
JARS
FOAM BRUSH
PLATE (TO CATCH FALL OUT GLITTER)

1. Brush a thin layer of mod podge onto the jar
2. Pour a good amount of glitter into the jar
3. Turn the jar on its side and keep turning it so that way the glitter covers the whole jar
4. Pour more glitter into the jar if you need to and repeat. Keep in mind that any excess glitter that falls onto the plate can be reused.
5. Let dry for a few hours
6. Reapply mod lodge to seal glitter.
6. Let dry again for several hours

Taaa dahhhh. Beautiful make up brush holders for  brushes that we all spend so much money on.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE BEST AIR BRUSH TAN RESULTS

Want a nice healthy tan without the harmful effects from the sun? Scared that self tanner that will look uneven and orange? If that's the case, you should try getting a professional air brushed tan. I'm not talking about the machines in some salons that you walk-in to that sprays you from head to foot. I'm talking about actually having a PROFESSIONAL that uses an air brush machine to give you a natural, even looking tan! I recently received a professional air brushed tan and have some tips and tricks for you to achieve the BEST results. 

Prepping at home:

Shave:

Freshly shaved legs are better than stubbles! For maximum results, I recommend shaving the day of your appointment for the smoothest legs possible! If you want to know a little secret of mine, use hair conditioner instead of shaving cream. Hair conditioner moisturizes your legs, leaving them noticeably soft afterwards. I NEVER get razor burn with conditioner. After trying this trick, you'll never buy shaving cream again! (pshh.. I haven't bought shaving cream in years.) Don't forget to shave under arms and bikini area. 

Exfoliate: 

Remove all the dead, dry skin from your body. This can be done by using a loofa and a good sugar scrub. You can find loofa's at target or local dollar store. As far as sugar scrubs, you can make you own (I made a DIY lip scrub found here, which can also be used for your body), or you can buy your own sugar scrub. I use a sugar scrub found at Esthetica, which leaves my skin feeling silky smooth afterwards. They key is use some type of abrasive to scrub off dry skin, especially on elbow's, knee's, and the bottom of your feet. 

Moisturize: 

Moisturizing helps achieve an even tan. We don't want a blotchy - uneven spray tan do we? Generously, apply a good moisturizer to your whole body, ensuring to get every part. My favorite is Jergens Shea Butter.

TIP: Before you get to the salon for your spray tan, I recommend getting any waxing you need done first. For example, you don't want to get your eyebrows waxed AFTER or else you'll have white marks from where the wax removed the color. Same goes for your bikini area!

THE TAN

NAKED OR BATHING SUIT?

Deciding to wear a bathing suit or getting sprayed naked really depends on your personal preferences. Do you want tan lines or do you feel comfortable going topless. It's completely up to you! No shame ladies, we're all women and just think how many naked people the person air brushing you has seen before you! I personally don't mind either way, but I did wear a black strapless bikini for picture purposes. If you wear a bikini, make sure it's a dark bikini or something you don't mind messing up!

Priming!

The person spray tanning you will apply a primer and a barrier cream. Ally, from Esthetica, first sprayed my whole body with a primer and then applied a barrier cream to my cuticles on my fingers and toes, and also to the palms of my hands. This step helps prevent dark spots in those areas and helps make your tan look as natural as possible!

Tip: If you're using anything for acne or a retinal cream, it's suggested to stop using this product 1 week before you get your air brush tan. (Only if your choose to get your face air brushed.)

The Air Brush

I'm naturally very pale, so I chose to go with a medium color. Ally applied the product to the front of my body first, working in small sections at a time. Once she was finished with one part of my body, she would dry that area before moving on to the next part. I like the fact that the spray doesn't have a strong scent (thank god it doesn't have that corn chip smell) and doesn't leave you feeling sticky afterwards. The whole process took about 30 minutes. 

Getting professionally air brushed gives you a more even tan and makes it look more natural than a self tanner or a walk-in spray machine would do. Ally ensured every part of my body was sprayed and afterwards rubbed the barrier cream off my cuticles and palms. She even made sure I didn't have any excess product in my knuckles. Talk about paying attention to detail! 

Tip: Come to your appointment with baggy clothes!

Maintaining

The tan gradually gets darker and by the third day you will see the maximum results. Your spray tan will last anywhere between 1-2 weeks. To achieve a longer tan, it's best to not exfoliate when showering. Also, you can touch up with a self tanner as it fades. I recommend Million Dollar Tan (CLICK HERE), which is fabulous organic self tanner.

Get Rid of Those Crusty Winter Lips with 2 DIY Lip Scrubs

It's been a cold winter for New Jersey. It snows almost every week, it's so cold, and my lips are going through it! My lips get so dry during the winter, they get crusty, and when I'm sick I get this icky film on them.. Who's with me? Chapstick and lip balm can only do so much.. here's 2 DIY Lip Scrubs to get rid of crusty lips.

1. Brown Sugar Scrub

-brown sugar

-coconut oil

1:1 ratio

(I used 1 tbsp of each)

2. Cinnamon Scrub

-Honey

-Sugar

-Cinamon for flavor

1:1 ratio for sugar and honey and I just used a dash of cinnamon for taste.

This tastes amazing, I just ate off my lips because its THAT good.

You can use your finger or you can apply using a toothbrush with a soft bristle. Scrub for about a minute, wash off with water or wipe off with a washcloth.  Apply your favorite chapstick/lip balm

 Have fun with these recipes. Get little jars from your local craft store, tie a ribbon, add a gift tag and give these little babies as gifts. You can even add ingredients like pumpkin, rosemary, cinnamon.. the list goes on.  Experiment with items from your own pantry and leave a comment below to tell me what you came up with!

Affordable Way to Clean Your Makeup Brushes Using Products You Already Have at Home

If you've been finding your face breakout lately, it could be because of your dirty makeup brushes. Cleaning your brushes is very important as they contain dirty makeup, dust, and oil after using them day after day. 

Be sure to take the proper steps to clean your brushes so that way they last a long time. Not cleaning them the proper way can cause them to shed and break. Makeup brushes are expensive.. and ain't nobody got time for that!

Here's what you'll need:

Anti-bacterial dish soap
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Plate

Bowl

Rice (optional)
Brushes

Anti-Bacterial Dish Soap will cleanse your brushes as well as kill all the germs your brush may contain. 

The soap strips your brushes and causes the bristles to get dry so the olive oil will put the moisture back in your brushes and leaving them soft.

Have you ever heard of putting your cell phone in rice after dropping it in water. Same idea. The first time I cleaned my brushes, it seemed like it took days and days for them to dry. The second time I cleaned my brushes, I decided to put rice at the bottom of my bowl. GENIUS! It only took a few hours for them to dry.

Let's get started..

Add dish soap and olive oil to a plate.

Swirl your brush around in the mixture and then swirl your brush in your hand to clean your brush. Set to the side and repeat to all your brushes

With luke-warm water and your brush pointing down, swirl your brush on the palm of your hand under the running water. Keep doing this until the soap is out of your brush and the water runs clear. Gently squeeze any excess water out of your brush Be careful not to pull:) 

Place your brush with the bristles facing down into the rice so any excess water is absorbed by the rice. Rice LOVES water. You can omit the rice if you prefer not to use it. Never let your brushes dry on their side..

(Important Note: We never want to let water seep into the barrel where the bristles are held by glue. Letting water get into the barrel will cause the glue inside to loosen, therefore causing your brush to shed and eventually be ruined.)

Another good tool to use are brush guards. Brush guards are plastic covers that help the bristles keep their shape while drying.
