DIY VANITY MAKEOVER PART 2 | Fixing my white vanity that turned yellow

Thursday, June 11, 2020

Back in 2014, you guys seen me re-do THIS vanity!

2014 | Before first revamp

Fast forward to 2020, I'm giving this vanity another makeover. I decided to give this vanity to my daughter so she can use it as a desk since online classes are a thing now due to Covid-19 but a few things had to happen before I gave it to her. The paint from the previous DIY turned yellow, the vanity chair had discolored, and to make this as a desk I had add a piece of wood to create a table top.

1. Fixing the Yellowing Paint

Because I didn't want to keep adding layers of paint, sanding was necessary.. at least on the top surface. Luckily my dad happen to have an electric sander I could use to make it easier. Maybe I shouldn't say luckily or easier because I made a mistake using this sander. You see, I've never used one before and while "testing" this sander out I didn't check to see what grit paper was already on there until it was too late. It was an 80 grit paper and it caused some scratches. I did my best to fix it by smoothing it out but a lesson was learned here.

For paint I choose a basic white paint from Vaspar Signature in Ultra White (the white paint you grab off the floor before they mix anything.)

After talking to the guy a Lowes I chose the Miniwax Water Based Finishing Spray Clear Semi Gloss. At first I made a mistake and grabbed an oil based finishing coat. The Lowes employee said you want to get a WATER based top coat since my paint was water based because if not it will turn yellow. It was at that moment that I realized 6 years ago I messed up!! The first time I gave this vanity a makeover I used an oil based primer, a water based paint, and a water based finishing coat which is why my vanity ended up turning yellow in certain areas.

Hardware: I liked the original hardware but I didn’t like how the brass stood out against the white so I painted them and wiped a majority of the paint off to tone down the brassy look.

2. Fixing and Updating the Vanity Chair

Another problem I had was the chair. Although I thought this print was PERFECT since it was white and gray and it matched my daughters bedding, this also had discolored over the last six years. I really wanted to keep it but if you seen my video where I re-did this chair.. I didn’t take off the original fabric off. The original fabric has to be from the 60 or 70’s and because I didn’t take that fabric off it, anytime I would sit in my chair after a shower or it ended up getting wet, it caused whatever was on the original fabric to transfer to the newer fabric. I tried to soak it in some water with detergent for a few hours and it did not budge.

The search for a piece of fabric..

So now to find a piece of FABRIC in the middle of a pandemic where everyone is buying fabric to make masks or sell masks. . challenge accepted.

Walmart's fabric aisles were empty. I couldn’t go into Jo-Anns to get a good look at what they had due to them only offering curb-side. It was hard at first because I really don’t know much about fabric and it was just one of those things I wanted to see in person.

So I thought if I were to buy a vanity chair, what would the fabric be? I went to amazon looked up vanity chairs and one of first things I seen was.. velvet.. suede. I was like BINGO! THAT IS IT. I thought this was perfect because when looking for Aaliyah’s bedding, she really wanted soft furry-like bedding and the velvet just reminded me of that. So I was able to find a seller on Amazon that sold grey velvet.

3. VANITY or DESK?

In my last DIY Vanity video I decided to ditch the part that had a mirror. This was only because I knew I was going to be putting a larger mirror on the wall. Now I kinda wish I would have at least kept that piece because it would make the perfect desk for my daughter who since March 14 has been doing online classes due to Covid-19.

To fix this I was able to find  a 3/4 inch piece of wood at Lowes and have my dad cut it to the exact size to fit this empty space. It was about $8 for a square piece of wood.

The only thing with this wood is that it was really rough around the edges and had gaps that were noticeable so I was able to find wood edging and ironed it on and painted over it. Smooth table top complete!

This vanity is now perfect for my daughter Aaliyah - she can use it not only ask a desk but also a place to do her nails and makeup as she gets older.

How to Self Tan in 2018. Tips and Tricks. From Pasty to Bronze!

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

1. EXFOLIATE

Exfoliating the skin before self tanning is a step that is SO important. It helps the tanner adhere to the skin best and reduces the tanner getting blotchy and streaky.

what to use to exfoliate skin

I use an exfoliator pad I got from Target. It's textured but not too abrasive for the skin. I use this ALL over my body to really make sure the tanner has a smooth surface to stick too. When exfoliating I show a lot of love to my knees, elbows, and feet since self tanner tends to stick to those areas the most. I wait to exfoliate until the END of my shower so my skin has softened up.

how to exfoliate, how to exfoliate skin, how to prep skin for self tanner

Since I tan my face, I do exfoliate my face as well. Instead of using an exfoliator pad, I just an exfoliator wash for my face that has beads to remove all the dead skin from my face and neck as well. The one I used from the above video is from Juice Beauty.

2. SHAVE

Shaving is a step I like to do the night before I know I'm going to be self tanning. Since I've been self tanning for YEARS, I know that if I apply self tanner immediately after I shave the tanner tends to sink in to the old hair follicles creating dark dots all over my legs (not cute haha). I shave the night before to minimize the appearance of all those dark dots on my legs. For super smooth skin, I always shave with conditioner, yes hair conditioner. It doesn't have to be anything expensive, a cheap Suave conditioner does the trick!

3. PREP ROUGH AREAS

do you use lotion before self tanner, what lotion to use for self tanning,

I ONLY apply lotion to my hands, feet, elbows and, knees. Showing special attention to these areas helps the tanner from getting dark and prevents it from being obvious you have self tanner on. I use Alba Botanica Coconut Rescue found at Target. It's important to make sure the lotion is completely absorbed into the skin before moving on to applying self tanner. Also use a lotion that isn't oily to avoid streaking.

4. APPLY SELF TANNER

self tanning application, best mitt for self tanning application, free tanning mitt with purchase

I use two things when I apply my self tanner. A velvet tanning mitt and a foundation brush. The tanning mitt helps blend out the lines and also prevents your hands from getting dark. The brush helps smaller areas and areas that tend to crease.

Then I apply about 2-3 pumps for each area that I work in. Also, I work in one small area at a time. I use circular motions, slightly overlapping the last area I worked in (think of vacuuming? lol).  I like using a tanner that has a color guard so I can see where I'm applying the product.

best affordable tanner, best natural self tanner, tanner with guarana,

The product I'm using here is called Skinny Glow by Bikini Bod. I like this particular tanner because it gives me a deep very natural tan. It doesn't make me the slightest bit orange and it doesn't scream "I HAVE TANNER ON!" (thanks to my tanning skills too of course LOL). It's one of the best self tanners I've tried and for the price you won't find anything better. Also, Skinny Glow contains Guarana and Caffeine to help tone problem areas and help reduce cellulite.

5. APPLY SELF TANNER TO BACK

sunless tanning back, self tan back, how to self tan your back,

Since I don't always have someone to tan my back, I have found that using a towel is my best friend. No special gadgets, just a good ole towel (maybe an old one is best). I apply the tanner right in the middle of the towel and just move back and forth until I can feel theres no more, then repeat. This is very easy and very effective!

6. APPLY SELF TANNER TO FACE

self tanning face, sunless tanning face, self tanning hands, self tanning feet, self tanning elbows

how to self tan face, how to tan face, what do you use to self tan your face

Here's where the foundation brush comes in. I apply 1 pump to the brush and work in small areas at a time until the self tanner is blended in. Using a foundation brush is great for your face, neck, ears, behind your ears, knuckles, ankles, feet and toes. All small areas that are hard to get to. When it comes to my knuclkes and any areas where there's folds, I stretch out that area so it's not white when I bend my fingers. The foundation brush I'm using is a 957 Foundation Brush from Bdellium Tools.

7. WAIT 3 HOURS

The waiting game. Honestly I like to wait 8 hours. I apply in the morning, then rinse off before bed. It really depends on the tanner. For this specific tanner I use, you only have to wait 3 hours for optimal results.

self tanning tips and tricks, self tanning before and after pics, how to self tan, sunless tanning,

To keep your tan on the longest, it's best to not exfoliate or scrub your skin until your ready to reapply or remove your tan all together. Self tanner typically lasts 5-7 days before reapplication.

Nose Ring 101 - How To Find the Perfect Nose Ring

Thursday, March 22, 2018

Before you go shopping for a new nose ring, let me give you the break down of the many different styles because chances are the shop stylist is going to ask you which kind of nose ring you prefer and your just going to standing there like uhhhh...

Just keep in mind, each style is different and what might work for some might not work for others. It's all trial and error.

Corkscrews - Most common nose ring to be pierced with. Pros: Doesn’t come out easily. Cons: Hangs out of nose. Difficult to put in.

Bone - Straight nose ring with a tiny ball at the end. (My Personal Favorite) Pros: Doesn’t come out easily. Great if you don’t plan on changing. Cons: Can be painful putting in at first. If you were pierced with a thicker gauge it may fall out easily

Bend to Fit Nose Rings - Straight nose ring that you can bend to fit your exact nose. Pros: Flexible, Customize to your nose, great for those with a thicker nose. Cons: I have yet to find any..

L shape - Nose ring that has a slight bend in it. Pros: Easily take in and out Cons: Comes out easier

Hoops - Circle nose ring Pros: Gives nose piercing room to breath Cons: Hoops are curved. Can be difficult to put in for a newbie.

DIY LIGHT WALL! How To Make Your Bedroom Feel Larger with Lights!

Thursday, March 22, 2018

Because my headboard is very tall, it started to make my room feel very small and I needed a new way to make my bedroom feel larger. I've also always wanted to put fairy lights in my bedroom so that gave me the idea to use the fairy lights to elongate my headboard and make the room feel larger and not so cramped.

When you watch the video, you'll see that originally I had my curtain rod right above the window which again just made the room feel very small. I decided to raise the rod to about an inch away from the ceiling, which instantly made the room feel larger.

I really scored big with these lights I found on Amazon. (You know it's a hit or a miss on there.) They're good to go as soon as you take them out the box! All you do is attached to the command hooks to the wall and you're good to go. Think of them like the icicle lights but for your bedroom and longer! You don't have to loop them up and down if you don't want to (I did so there wasn't wasted lights hiding behind my headboard).

This DIY was super quick and easy and I love how it looks at night. They act like a nightlight in a way. I can still see what I need without turning on the light and waking up my one year old who still sleeps in our room. Watch the video above to see how it's done!

Jewelry Life Hacks - Cleaning Jewelry, Storage, Tips & Tricks

Saturday, June 4, 2016

Did you know that you can clean your sterling silver with ketchup. All you have to do is put ketchup and your sterling silver jewelry in a bowl, leave it for about 5-10 minutes, to remove the ketchup just rinse off with water and a toothbrush. The acid in the ketchup helps restore your sterling silver back to new =)

For cleaning gold jewelry, you actually don’t need any harsh jewelry cleaner. All you need is a mild dish soap and water. Use a toothbrush to get in any grooves or channels. Also, did you know soap and water is the best way to clean your gold plated jewelry as well?

This next hack is for those who have sensitive ears and find your ears really sore after wearing costume jewelry. All you need is vaseline to create a barrier between the metal and your ears.

Most people already know about this hack, but if you don’t and you end up losing an earring back, all you need is an eraser for a temporary fix.

This next hack is great for traveling with your jewelry! Using a pill case is a clever way to store your earrings and rings while you’re on vacation, preventing you from losing anything and helping you get organized by using the days of the week on the pill case.

Sterling Silver is known for tarnishing but did you know if you store your sterling silver correctly it will slow down the tarnishing. Store your silver in a zip lock bag and also using a slicica bag will help slow down the tarnishing as well!

If you want a quick fix for oversized rings and need a ring guard, cut a piece of a straw and create a slit, then hook on to the back of your ring.. there ya go. Easy inexpensive ring guard.

Another hack for a ring guard is use a hot glue gun. Put some hot glue onto a surface and dip the back of your ring into the hot glue so it gets on the inside as well. Once it’s cool to touch, shape the glue around the ring and ta da! DIY ring guard. Don’t worry, you can remove the glue easily and it doesn’t ruin your jewelry.

Did you know you can use a paper clip to help hook on your bracelet if you have no one to help you? ... or you can use a paper clip to remove a knot from your necklaces.

If you want to prevent knots if your necklaces, put your necklaces through a straw. This is also great for traveling so that way you don’t have to worry about your necklaces balling up together.

AZURE AND METALLIC ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS SHADOW COUTURE PALETTE TUTORIAL

Sunday, August 9, 2015

Sorry I pronounced Azure wrong the whole video! WHOOPS LOL

Azure is a gorgeous blue from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture Palette. I HAD to do a tutorial using this color. I smoked it out using the color Noir. For the inner corner, I used the color Metallic, which is a true gold and really makes this look pop!
Hope you guys enjoy!
Love,
Christina

SO excited Urban Decay came out with a Smoky Palette! I absolutely love smoky looks (if you watch my channel you already know that lol). I'm surprised it's taken them this long to come out with a palette like this. For my first look with this palette I decided to go with a more grey smokey eye. I used the colors Thirteen, Combust, Whiskey, Black Heart, and Armor. Subscribe to see more looks with this palette here: https://www.youtube.com/user/hellocrisst1

OLAPLEX TREATMENT REVIEW

Friday, July 10, 2015

Scroll down for review on YouTube.

So excited to talk about the Olaplex treatment I received, courtesy of Red Door Spa Atlantic City. I didn't know anything about Olaplex until I received the treatment. What I found out about it is that it's actually like insurance for your hair. It makes your hair smooth and shinny. In fact, it reconnects the broken disulfide sulfur bonds in your hair, which are typically broken during thermal and chemical services (coloring and hot irons).

The Process:
The process itself is simple and only two parts. The first treatment is applied to your hair and left in for ten minutes and then rinsed out. Next, the second treatment applied, left in for ten minutes, rinsed, then it's time to shampoo and condition. It's really that simple ;)

The Results:
I would say my hair is a little more on the dry side because of all the heat I apply to it, but after this treatment.. I couldn't believe how smooth and silky my hair was. The best part is how healthy it actually looks. I don't think there's ever been a time my hair has looked THIS healthy. I'm very pleased with my hair and very excited to have been able to try this treatment. I recommend Olaplex to anyone that wants to add life back to their hair, you'll be just as pleased as I was with the results.

Until next time..

Love,
Christina

GO-TO NIGHT OUT LOOK USING NAKED PALETTE

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

I have a look that I always go-to when I'm in a rush, not sure what I'm wearing, or not feeling creative. Not only do I wear this look at night, I also wear it during the day. For a day time look, I typically do this same eyeshadow but simplify it by just going with mascara instead of lashes. I also ditch the eyeliner and go for a nude lip. What's great is that it's easy, anyone can do it, and you only need one eyeshadow palette. My go-to neutral palette is the original Naked palette from Urban Decay. It was the very first high-end palette ($54)  I ever bought and I still use it after 3 years.

For a night out, I love to switch up the lip color and typically go for a bold lip. Here I went with MAC's stone but I love a deep red for dinner like MAC's Viva Glam 1, or a deep purple like MAC's Diva. It all depends on my mood and that's my favorite part about it. I feel my most confident going with the deepest colors, but that's just me. Go for whatever your heart desires my loves.

Until next time..
Love,
Christina
